• Amazon and Smashwords use different formats.
• Most authors write their eBooks in Microsoft Word, and format everything in word.
• Amazon Kindle uses mobi files, so when you submit your Word document to Amazon, the Amazon site takes your Word document, converts it into a HTML document, and then converts the HTML document into a mobi document. A mistake can occur at all of those stages.
• Smashwords also takes Word files, but in this case it converts them to BOTH mobi and Epub format. Epub is the format used by Apple iPad, iPhones, and Sony Reader, Again, it only takes a small mistake to get the formatting wrong, and your book will be rejected.
• Neither mobi nor Epub accept all the formatting most people use when they write with Word, and if you've used unrecognized formatting your file will be corrupted.
